Analysis, picks of General George and San Vincente Stakes

3 stakes races to examine today, 2 of which involve some major players on the actual Derby Trail.
First at Laurel Park is the General George Stakes, 7 furlongs, Grade 3, for 4YO+.
My top 3 are Page McKenney, Majestic Affair & Majestic Hussar. First two are deserving favorites here. Majestic Hussar may be the only value to get a piece but not enough for an overlay. He was off for much of 2015, posting a 94 first off layoff, not achieving that mark again until 11/25 in a listed stakes event. He equaled that with a 98 here on 12/26 and again a 94 on 1/16 in the Fire Plug here.  Lifetime he carries best speed figures for the distance. One near bullet work since last.  I’d use him with the 2 faves.

At Santa Anita there is the big race of the day, the Grade 2 San Vincente, 200k for top 3YOs.  My top 3 are Nyquist, El Charro and Sheikh of Sheiks.
There is no stopping Nyquist from going undefeated in 6. I’m a fan of his consistent fast speed figures, and same for distance and prior track runs here.  El Charro is my overlay pick here. Boosted speed figure to 96 in the Mucho Macho Man a month ago at Gulfstream, ahead of an 86. Could have run better there, as he was going 4 wide.  Also best turn time and turn time gain of the field. Sheikh put up lifetime bests of 92 and 89 in last two, and seems fastest of these based on his early/pressing run style. Waiting 6 weeks to stretch out from 6 furlongs. Also has competitive turn time.

Finally at Oaklawn, there is the Southwest Stakes, 8.5 furlongs, Grade 3 for top 3YOs.   I’ll update this post a bit later once I’ve done my analysis.
